volunteer

We are a community focused organization, but with the assistance of volunteers we are able to impact the area more effectively. We try to encourage people from different cultures to interact and work together for a common goal. We have an exciting volunteer program, however the reality is that volunteers cost the organisation money. Food, accommodation, transport, facilitation, translators, websites, phone calls, admin, etc all add up. So we need to charge a fee to cover the running cost. There are a number of options available, please contact us for details. We can accommodate groups up to about 18 people. Accommodation is in a traditional Xhosa homestead, 1km from the beach.

1. Is there an age limit?
Generally from 18 to about 50. However we do accommodate small school groups and if you are older than 50 and feel that you are up for the physically challenges, we would love to have you.

2. How do I book?
Drop us an email and we will send you an info pack.

3.
What is the accommodation like?
Volunteers are accommodated at a traditional Xhosa homestead. A mud rondavel with a long drop toilet and an outside shower. Visit www.mbolompohomestay.weebly.com for more info.

4. Do we have to have travel insurance?

We don't currently require that you have comprehensive travel insurance but strongly recommend it.

5. What about malaria?

Malaria is only found in the eastern side of South Africa, Northern KwaZulu Natal, Swaziland and along the Mozambique border. There is no malaria in the Eastern Cape, so no need for concern.

6. What's the food like?
Every effort is made to cater for special diets, however due to local supplies and remoteness of our locations, this is not always possible. Please ensure that you inform us beforehand if you have any specific dietary requirements. We provide a simple, healthy and culturally-relevant menu. A rough idea of menu could look like the following:

Breakfast
- Tea/coffee
- Bread
- Cereals
- Fruit
Lunch
- Sandwiches or pasta salad
- Home made Xhosa bread
Dinner
- Potatoes/rice/pap with cabbage/butternut/beans/gravy and maybe some chicken or stew

7. Is it all work and no play?
Depending on the program, we tend to work about 5 - 6 hours a day and then head down to the beach. Weekends are you are encouraged to explore the area, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, surfing, visiting nearby backpackers and nature reserves.

8. What work will we be doing?
Check out the "projects" page for a list of the all the things we are involved with.

9. What would an average day look like?
7:00am Breakfast
7:30am Admin, house keeping, collecting water
8:00am Clearing alien vegetation
            Planting trees
            Erosion management
            Collecting seeds
            Environmental workshops, schools program, etc
1:00pm Lunch
2:00pm Continue on projects
or Free time (swim, sleep, etc)
7:00pm Dinner

10. Do we need a visa?
If you don't hold a South African passport you will need a visas, however most nationalities can acquire one at the border or airport. But it is your responsibility to check with both your embassy and the South African Embassy for more details.

It might sound obvious, but remember that Africa is different from home - that is one of the reasons you want to come. Patience and humility will get you a long way. Come prepared, then be prepared to go with the flow, expect the unexpected and be open to the diversity of this amazing corner of the continent.
